This month we’re celebrating great books and readers! Close out the year with a comforting read or a challenging one, and come talk about it with other book lovers! Check out our newest book club, Top Shelf, at the South Mandarin Library, and make sure to keep an eye on the meeting dates this month as some have changed due to holiday closures.
Whether it is Budo, the imaginary friend in Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, or the recently deceased Susie Salmon in The Lovely Bones, the presence of a great narrator or unusual perspective makes for a better read. Some authors choose the story within a story like Princess Bride where you and a character are being told the story. Other authors use a journalistic account of part of someone’s life such as in Time Traveler’s Wife.

If you haven’t tried one before, teen mysteries offer not only the excitement of a who done it; but also, a dash of drama and maybe some light romance. This is the season to lock the doors, put on your thinking cap, and untangle mysteries that come with a side of fun. November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to recognize and center the history and contributions of Indigenous people and tribes of the United States. Whether you're looking for pictures books celebrating Native American culture to read with kids, a bestselling book written for teens to check off for your Jax Stacks Reading Challenge or just books by Native authors, the Library has some recommendations this month.
Walter M. Miller Jr. wrote A Canticle for Leibowitz fifteen years after serving as a soldier during World War II. The novel was inspired by Miller’s regret at having taken part in the destruction of Montecassino Abbey, the oldest monastery in Europe.
If you’re a writer, you know that November is National Novel Writing Month. Though, you might call it “NaNoWriMo” – either affectionately or, let’s face it, out of sheer necessity.
