Military Appreciation Month

#Military Appreciation Month

Throughout the month of May, and especially Memorial Day, we pause to appreciate all those who have stepped forward and answered the call to serve in our Armed Forces – sailors, soldiers, airmen, marines, and coastguardsmen. We also recognize the commitment and sacrifices of the entire military family: spouses, children and parents. Jacksonville is a proud military town! We salute each and every one of you.

Looking for ways to celebrate this weekend? Jacksonville Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day. But there’s still time to visit!

#The First Memorial Day

A Day for Rememberin’ by Leah Henderson is a moving tribute to the little-known history behind the first Memorial Day, illustrated by Coretta Scott King Award winner Floyd Cooper, that reminds us to never forget the people who put their lives on the line for their country.

You can read the ebook with your little ones anytime on Hoopla, even if the library is closed.

#Thank You for Your Service

Celebrate the extraordinary heroism and equally valuable contributions on the home front of this generation’s American veterans with For Love of Country: What Our Veterans Can Teach Us About Citizenship, Heroism, and Sacrifice by Howard Schultz. For more true stories of America’s bravest warriors, check out Walk in My Combat Boots by bestselling author James Patterson and First Sergeant US Army (Ret.) Matt Eversmann.

#Forgotten Heroes

If you’re conducting research on local veterans, be sure to come to the Special Collections Department at the Main Library. Members from the Jean Ribault chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently donated their Hunting Heroes project to the library. This 18-month project catalogs forgotten heroes interred at Pinehurst Cemetery in Jacksonville.
