Books to Celebrate Military Appreciation Month

Military Appreciation Month

Throughout the month of May, and especially Memorial Day, we pause to appreciate all those who have stepped forward and answered the call to serve in our Armed Forces – sailors, soldiers, airmen, marines, and coastguardsmen. We also recognize the commitment and sacrifices of the entire military family: spouses, children and parents. Jacksonville is a proud military town! We salute each and every one of you.

Looking for ways to celebrate this weekend? Jacksonville Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day. But there’s still time to visit!

Hire a Veteran Day

Hire a Veteran Day: Tips for Vets and Employers

National Hire A Veteran Day on July 25 is an annual reminder and a call to action for employers and all those in hiring positions to seek out qualified veterans to hire and promote. It was founded by Marine Corps veteran Dan Caporale (who also founded the organization Hire Our Heroes). It is also a way to communicate to veterans the value and experience they bring to the table; veterans are highly trained, disciplined individuals with proven skills in communication and teamwork.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day

Military Spouse Appreciation Day

Life as a military spouse takes a lot of courage. For some, it’s as much a calling as it is a commitment. The work can be emotionally draining - as it too often involves hardship, separation, and loneliness. But it can also be incredibly inspiring and worthwhile: as their stories attest. Traditionally set for the Friday before Mother’s Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day recognizes the important role that military families, especially spouses, play in keeping our military strong and our country safe. Today, we honor all those who serve - in and out of uniform - with these stories of love, family, and duty.
