#READ: The Other Side of Perfect by Mariko Turk

Goals are important, but what happens when things sometimes don't go as planned? A terrifying fall shatters Alina Keeler's leg-- and her dreams of a professional ballet career along with it. After a summer healing, she is forced to trade her pre-professional dance classes for normal high school, where she reluctantly joins the school musical. What happens when rehearsals offer more than she expects? To move forward, Alina must make peace with her past.  As broken as she feels, can she open her heart?

Questions to think about while you read:

  • What are your thoughts about Alina's feelings towards ballet, once her injury determines that she will not be able to pursue her goal?
  • Sometimes, when we are "cut off" from doing something we love, it allows us to look at that activity with a critical eye. Alina focused on the racism of classical ballet in an effort to make changes for the better. Would that be easy or hard for you, to try to influence change in something you no longer have an active role in?
  • Above all, this novel is about healing. What aspect of healing stands out to you the most?
