Join us this week to explore the animals at the zoo! Let's go!

#READ: Hello Hello by Brendan Wenzel

Hello Hello Book Cover

Use your library card or apply for an ecard here to access our digital library!

In simple text a set of animals, each one linked to the previous one by some trait of shape, color, or pattern, greet and interact with one another.

Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:

  • Run your finger under each word as you read it.
  • Emphasize the repeated word "hello" and encourage your little one to say it with you.
  • As you read, explore the colorful illustrations. See if your little one can tell you the name of any of the animals. Help them identify animals they may not know.
  • Each new animal has something in common with the last one. Can you find what is the same about them? What is different about them?

#SING: We’re Going to the Zoo

(Tune: The Farmer in the Dell)

We're going to the zoo,

We're going to the zoo!

Lots of animals to see,

We're going to the zoo!

We'll see some elephants there,

We'll see some elephants there.

Swinging their trunks back and forth,

We’ll see some elephants there.

We'll see some kangaroos there,

We’ll see some kangaroos there,

Hopping up and hopping down,

We'll see some kangaroos there!

We'll see some penguins there,

We’ll see some penguins there,

Waddling, waddling, on the ice

We'll see some penguins there!

We're going to the zoo,

We're going to the zoo!

Lots of animals to see,

We're going to the zoo!

#EXPLORE: Let's Make a Zoo!

Animal Figure Toys
Map of a Zoo

Materials:

  • Plastic animals, bugs, reptiles, etc.
  • Large piece of craft paper or a flattened cardboard box
  • Crayons or markers
  • Various decorative toys and materials like shells, sticks, pipe cleaners, blocks, etc.

Instructions:

  1. Place the craft paper or cardboard onto a flat surface that your little one can easily reach.
  2. Set the rest of the materials around it. Explain that they can create their own zoo!
  3. Let them create their zoo however they want.

Ideas for conversation:

  • What animals do you think can live together? Why or why not?
  • How big of a space do these animals need?
  • What kinds of things do you think these animals like? Ponds/trees/grass/mud?
  • Come up with a name for your zoo. When your little one is complete, demonstrate writing the name of the zoo on a sheet of paper, showing them each letter, and place it near the zoo.
