Junior Scholars: Summer!

It's SUMMER! School is out, the weather is warm, and there are so many fun things to do! This includes the Library's Summer Reading Program, which starts THIS WEEK! This year's theme is "Oceans of Possibilities."  For every 15 days that you read for at least 20 minutes, you’ll earn a free book (that’s up to FOUR books!)! You can pick up a bookmark at your nearest library to help you keep track. But the fun doesn’t stop there...you can also earn tickets by visiting your library and attending programs that you can turn in for prizes! We hope to see you at some of our events and activities, and keep reading!

#READ: Hello Summer! By Shelley Rotner

Hello Summer Book Cover

Whether biting into a juicy peach, dropping a fishing line in a pond, or splashing at the beach, these crisp, gorgeous photos of children celebrate quintessential moments of summer. In a simple but lyrical text, Rotner documents iconic warm-weather activities as well as changes to plants, animals, and weather that occur during a temperate summer.

#PLAY: DIY Giant Matching Game

Giant Matching Game

Supplies:

  • 25 12 x 12-inch squares of posterboard*
  • Acrylic paint and paintbrushes

*to make more durable "cards," use 12" x 12" cork squares

Instructions:

  1. Use the paint and paintbrushes to paint 12 pairs of summer-themed items on the posterboard squares. Suggestions include: ice cream cones, watermelon slices, palm trees, suns, beach balls, lemonades, popsicles, kites, sunglasses, flip flops, orange slices, pineapples, or whatever makes you think of summer!
  2. On the remaining square, paint the words "One More Time!"
  3. Allow all pieces to dry completely.
  4. On the reverse side of the cards, paint the same design on all squares (this is the back of the "cards."). Allow all pieces to dry completely.
  5. To play, put all "cards" face down in a 5-card by 5-card square. Players take turns flipping two cards at a time, trying to find a match. Once a match is made, those two cards are removed. If a player flips over the "One More Time!" card, they get another turn. Play continues until all pairs have been matched; the player with the most matches wins.
  6. For a smaller and easier game for younger children, choose 8 pairs and make a 4-card by 4-card grid.
