Junior Scholars November 2022: Gratitude

Do you have an attitude of gratitude? As our featured book shows, one way to spread positivity is by appreciating the good people and experiences in your life. We've got more great resources and activities below that will help you build your gratitude skills. And of course, we are grateful for YOU...give us the opportunity to thank you in person at a program this month!

#READ:  Sincerely, Emerson by Emerson Weber

Sincerely, Emerson book cover

One tiny act of kindness can have a huge impact. And in this heartwarming, hopeful, absolutely true story, a simple letter does just that.

A true story that quickly went viral, this is now a timely, extraordinary picture book. Sincerely, Emerson follows eleven-year-old Emerson Weber as she writes a letter of thanks to her postal carrier, Doug, and creates a nationwide outpouring of love.

This is a story of gratitude, hope, and recognition: for all the essential helpers we see every day, and all those who go unseen.

Questions to think about while you read:

  • To what person in your daily life would you send a thank-you note?
  • Do you think Emerson knew that her act of kindness would have such a big effect?
  • How do you feel when someone thanks you for doing something?

#PLAY: Gratitude Pictionary

pictionary scribbles

Gather a group of friends and/or family members and play together!

Supplies:

  • Large, blank sheets of paper
  • Pencils, pens, markers, or crayons
  • Timer (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Divide into two teams; take turns between teams.
  2. A player from each team will have to draw whatever they are thankful for and have their teammates guess. Remember: no words or numbers can be used and no verbal cues!
  3. The team with the most correct guesses wins!

Optional: to make the game more challenging, use a timer to make a 30-60 second time limit for each guess!

#EXPLORE: Wax Resist Thank You Cards

wax resist thank you cards

Supplies:

  • Multi-media paper, cardstock, or thick paper
  • Scissors
  • White crayon
  • Watercolor paint & paintbrushes
  • Optional: markers

Instructions:

  1. Use scissors to cut paper in half on the long side. Fold the two pieces in half and orient your cards the way you like (with the folded edge on top or on the side, as seen in the example above).
  2. Use white crayon to write "thank you" and if desired, draw a design, like a heart or flower.
  3. Use watercolors to paint across the front of the card, over the white crayon markings. The wax from the crayon will resist the paint, and your crayon drawings will stand out.
  4. Let the paint dry completely.
  5. If desired, use markers to add details to your design.
  6. Write a thank you note on the inside of the card and deliver to someone to share your gratitude. If you need help writing a note, check out How to Write a Thank-You Letter by Cecilia Minden on the book list below!
