Junior Scholars (K - 5th Grade): Dinosaurs

This is an especially exciting week, because just about everyone is fascinated by dinosaurs! The "terrible lizards" take center stage in our programming: we'll learn about their various defenses, what we know about their footprints, and be inspired by these amazing creatures while learning different art techniques. Join us to learn even more about dinosaurs!

READ: Dinosaurs by Will Osbourne

Dinosaurs Book Cover

This book provides a lot of information about dinosaurs in an accessible chapter-book format. Drawings and some black-and-white photographs accompany facts about famous fossil hunters, geologic eras, general characteristics of dinosaurs, and specific species. Extensive suggestions for further research are included.

PLAY: Hot Dinosaur Egg

Dinosaur Egg

Supplies: football (or any shaped ball), music. If desired, you can cover the football with decorated paper to look more like a dinosaur egg.

This is very similar to the classic game of Hot Potato. Players sit in a circle, and someone starts out with the "Hot Dinosaur Egg" (ball). Play music and players pass the "egg" around the circle. Once the music stops, the person left holding the "egg" is EXTINCT (out of the game). Continue until there is only one player left.

EXPLORE: Make a Dinosaur Fossil

DIY Dinosaur Fossil

Supplies:

  • Paper towel and toilet paper rolls
  • Paper
  • Markers, crayons, etc.
  • Scissors
  • Dinosaur books (see the list below!)
  • Optional: large sheet of cardboard & glue

Instructions:

  1. Look through the dinosaur books to decide what kind of dinosaur fossil you'd like to build. Do some basic research on that dinosaur: Did it walk on two legs or four? Did it have a big tail, small arms, or long neck?
  2. Using what you've learned, take the paper tubes and make the fossil for the dinosaur you chose.
  3. When you're finished with the body, make a head (skull) for your fossil by drawing one on paper and cutting it out.
  4. Optional: if you want to keep your dinosaur fossil, glue the pieces to a large sheet of cardboard. Be sure to label it with the dinosaur name and some facts about it!
