Jr. Scholars: Sharing Is Caring

I think it's safe to say that everyone has had a time where they want something all to themselves, whether it's a food item, a toy, or time with a friend or family member. We all need some one-on-one time with our favorite things and people. However, we also need to learn to share with others. This week, we'll be learning about the importance of sharing, and although it can be hard sometimes, you will be rewarded for your generosity. We’d love for you to come and share the experience of a program this week!

#READ: Not Fair, Won't Share by Sue Graves

Not Fair, Won't Share Book Cover Illustration of Children Not Sharing

When Nora does not let others play in the class space station, it makes everyone angry, including the teacher, and demonstrates the value of sharing and of managing anger, in a book with a story for children to retell and suggestions for parents.

#PLAY: Three-Legged Race

Two Boys Running a Three-Legged Race

Supplies: bandana or strip of cloth

This is a game that will work with two people, but is more fun with four or more. Players are going to have to learn to "share" a leg! To start, have an adult tie two players' legs together at the ankle with the bandana or strip of cloth. Getting around will require some teamwork—partners must listen to each other and work together until they can safely walk as a unit. Once players are feeling confident, have a short race to see which team can walk the fastest! Walking only, friends, running in this activity is not advised.

#EXPLORE:  Collaborate to Make a Doodle Mural

Many children doodling art on a canvas

While doodling may seem like a waste of time, research shows that it improves our memory, our ability to focus, and our thinking process.

Supplies:

  • Large sheet of paper, from a roll
  • Black permanent markers
  • Coloring implements (crayons, markers, highlighters, colored pencils)
  • Optional: masking tape and music

Instructions:

  1. If needed, tape the paper to a large work surface. This can even be a floor with hard surface.
  2. Get together with friends and/or family members and enjoy a doodling session! Draw whatever you like while you visit with one another. You can even play music to inspire your doodling.
  3. Once the paper is filled (and this can take more than one doodling session), if desired, use coloring implements to embellish each others' doodles.
  4. When everyone is satisfied that the artwork is finished, find a location to hang it up so everyone can enjoy the work you created together!
