#Honoring Our Veterans
Happy Veterans Day to all who have served, currently serve, and to the loved ones, family members, and caregivers of service members. Today and throughout the year, we honor and appreciate those who have made and continue to make sacrifices for our country. Jacksonville Public Library has created veteran-themed booklists for all ages to pay tribute to this national holiday.
#History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day is a U.S. legal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany during World War I, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day in many countries the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. Following World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day.
#Library Collections
Jacksonville Public Library boasts an outstanding collection of books featuring stories and information written by and about people from diverse backgrounds, races, ethnicities, life experiences, and viewpoints. Throughout the month, the Library will highlight books from our collection that focus on and celebrate veterans. These will be featured on our blog and in book displays at local libraries.
In observance of this holiday, all Jacksonville Public Libraries will be closed on Monday, November 11 and will resume normal operations on Tuesday, November 12. Our digital collection is open 24/7 just for YOU!
"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." — John F. Kennedy
