Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer "Ms. Sue" is Beloved by Children Visiting the Library

Volunteer Sue is ready to check in customers.

Sue has been serving in the children's story area at the South Mandarin Library since 2017. Her friendly nature makes her beloved by the children, who call her Ms. Sue. In addition to helping with the Storytimes, she also assists with the popular crafts and during summer parties and shelves materials. Her weekly contribution has amounted to over 440 hours since 2017.

Program & Event Volunteer

Assist with program and special events: setting up and breaking down the room, registration, audience Q&A, book signing, photography, greeting attendees, assisting with activities, distributing materials, and other tasks. These programs and special events rotate between most of the 21 Libraries and may occur on weekdays, weeknights, or Saturdays.

Therapy Animal Volunteer

Our Reading with a Therapy Animal activity allows young children to practice their reading skills and gain confidence in reading aloud by reading to a therapy dog or cat in a safe, nonjudgmental setting. Each child will select a book from our collection or bring their own book and will read aloud to the therapy animal and their handler for 10-15 minutes. The children and their parents/guardians may ask to pet the animal.

Teen Advisory Board

An opportunity for teens to develop leadership skills and earn volunteer credit for scholarships by participating in activities, discussing a book, and sharing ideas on books, programs, and services they would like to see at the Library. Teens can earn additional service hours by participating in certain activities associated with TAB.  Talk to the TAB facilitator for more details.
