Volunteer "Ms. Sue" is Beloved by Children Visiting the Library

Volunteer Sue is ready to check in customers.

Sue has been serving in the children's story area at the South Mandarin Library since 2017. Her friendly nature makes her beloved by the children, who call her Ms. Sue. In addition to helping with the Storytimes, she also assists with the popular crafts and during summer parties and shelves materials. Her weekly contribution has amounted to over 440 hours since 2017.

What inspired you to volunteer for the Library?

When I retired I was looking for something to do to get me out of the house a bit. The South Mandarin branch is located nearby, so I applied online to volunteer there and was thrilled when I was invited to work with the Children's Department.

What is the most rewarding part about volunteering for the Library?

I love the kids, seeing their smiles when they come to Storytime, peeking in while they "open shut them" and "shake their sillies out," watching them grow up. Books and reading were an important part of my childhood and my daughter's childhood, and I'm so happy to see there are still kids today who enjoy that experience.

Is there anything you've learned about the library since becoming a volunteer that you wish more people knew about?

I've learned about the amount of work that goes into the background, especially when you have special activities like the summer learning program.

What has been your favorite part about volunteering?

One of the things I love the most as a volunteer is that I can have a look at the new books when I am coming early in the morning before Storytime so I can go check them out later after the program is finished.
