Teen Think Tank: Laugh Out Loud

When's the last time you can remember laughing out loud? Not with an emoji or in text slang, but with uncontrollable bursts of snickers and snorts that bring an ache to your belly and tears to your eyes? Now's as good a time as any – April is National Humor Month, and we've got plenty of reads and resources to bring you some comedic relief!

# READ: Nimona by ND Stevenson

Nimona book cover

Poke fun at hero and villain stereotypes with the graphic novel that inspired the Netflix animated film! Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter determined to be the sidekick of the nefarious (in name only) Ballister Blackheart, the sworn enemy of the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics. As the two form an alliance, they delve deeper into the organization's inner workings and soon find that the lines that separate good and evil aren't simply black and white.

Questions to think about while you read:

  • Think of a book or comic that you found funny. What kind of humor was it?
  • In what ways would you consider humor to be a form of intelligence?
  • Why is having a sense of humor is important?

# LISTEN: Food Network Pranks

April Fool's Day Graphic Text

If you're in the mood to bring a smile (eventually) to friends and family, and all the copies of the Mischief Maker's Manual by John Hargrave are checked out, try recreating one of these playful food pranks!

Questions to think about while you listen:

  • What are some practical jokes that you’ve played or seen others play?
  • Why do you think people love April Fool's Day so much?
  • Where do you think a line should be drawn in terms of the types of pranks played?

# EXPLORE: Improv Games

That being said, your friends and family are more likely to enjoy it when they're not the punchline! So bring everyone in on the joke and keep the laughter rolling with an improv game! The guidelines for the more popular ones, like World's Worst or Gibberish Interpreter, are easily accessible on Google.
