Cozy up with a good book, and a fun song and activity, as we usher in the coldest season!
#READ: A Day So Gray by Marie Lamba
Use your library card or get a library card here!
Once you start to notice, colors and reasons for gratitude are everywhere, and that changes everything! Celebrate the hues and comforts of a cozy winter day as a discontented girl at first notices only dull grays and browns in a snowy landscape but is coaxed by her friend to look more closely. Soon she finds orange berries, blue water, purple shadows, and more. Warm friendship and a fresh way of seeing things transform a snow-covered landscape from bleak to beautiful!
Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:
- As you read, encourage your little one to act out the story by pretending to stomp through the snow, make a snowball, pet a cat, and blow on hot cocoa.
- Invite your little learner to join you in saying the repeated phrase "No it isn't!" as you read the story together.
- Before reading what colors are on the page, ask your child to name and point to the colors they can see.

#EXPLORE: Ice Painting
Materials:
- Shallow plastic container or similar
- Watercolor paint
- Chunky paintbrushes
- Ice cubes or bag of ice
- Jar of water
Instructions:
- Add ice to shallow container, and place jar of water in middle of container to avoid spills.
- Lay out watercolors and paintbrushes next to ice container.
- Invite your little learner to paint the ice with the watercolor paints.
- While your little learner paints, ask them questions about their choices, such as:
- What do you think will happen if we add blue to that red ice?
- What color are you going to add next?
- I see you painted the ice over here yellow and orange, why did you choose those colors for this corner?
- When it seems your little learner has painted all of the ice, scoop or shift ice from the bottom of the bin to the top to expose the unpainted ice.
