Race car 1 honks look at me!
He zooms in front with the turn of a key.
Race car 2 is close behind.
The sound of vroom is on his mind.
This simple, rhyming text is perfect for reinforcing counting with young children, and the vibrant, energetic illustrations make this a terrific package for the youngest vehicle enthusiasts.

Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:

  • Invite your little learner to point to the items on the page as you read about them. For example, can you find the red, yellow, and green lights?
  • As you read, occasionally ask your little one what number comes next.
  • Explore the "Meet the Race Cars!" page at the back of the book, and talk to your little one about the numbers, colors, names and interests of each race car!

SING: Where is Red Light?

(Tune: Frere Jacques)

EXPLORE: Red Light, Green Light

Materials:

  • An open space to play in
  • A way to mark the start and finish lines, whether it's furniture, physical markers, or painters tape on the floor

Instructions:

  1. Go over the meanings of the different traffic light colors with your little learner. This month's Little Learners YouTube video, linked above, may be helpful in reviewing the meanings of each color.
  2. Explain that you will be playing Red Light, Green Light together, and that they'll be a little car that needs to follow the traffic lights. Remind your little one that when you say "Green light" they can move forward, but if you say "Red light" they must stop!
  3. Let your little one know that the goal is to reach the finish line, just like the cars in Race Car Count!
  4. Practice a few times with the commands "red light" and "green light".
  5. If your little learner is already familiar with this game, or you believe they need an extra challenge, you can add in the "Yellow light" command. When you call yellow light, it's time for the little cars to slow down.
