Planes, trains, bikes, buses, and boats! Whether they have wheels that roll, or they fly or float, this month is all about Things That Go!
READ: Tow Truck Joe by June Sobel
Use your library card or apply for an ecard here to access our digital library!
One for all! All for one! We can fix it! Let's have fun! Welcome to Drivedale, a busy little town full of cars and trucks to meet! Joe the Tow and Patch the Pup are there twenty-four hours a day to help friends in need and keep everyone rolling along smoothly. When a cookie-crumbling fender-bender brings traffic to a halt, Joe knows just how to turn the sticky situation into a delicious solution: by working together!
Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:
- Encourage your little one to help you read the signs found throughout Drivedale.
- Invite your little learner to make predictions about the story as you read. Will Joe will be able to help? What will they do to clean up this big mess?
- Ask your child to identify the different vehicles on pages. Can they find the mail truck? What about the cement mixer? Can they name any other vehicles they see?
SING: She'll Be Drivin' a Bulldozer
(Tune: She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain)
EXPLORE: Ramps and Cars
Materials:
- Cardboard or similar material, cut into long strips
- Toy cars
- Small balls such as ping-pong balls, pom-poms, or tennis balls
Instructions:
- Invite your little one to use the cardboard to build ramps off of coffee tables, shelves, chairs, or other objects, and drive small toy vehicles down them
- After building the ramps, encourage your little one to experiment by asking questions while they play such as:
- What else could we use to make ramps?
- Which car do you think will be the fastest?
- Do you think the car will be faster, or a ball?
