READ: Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party by Kimberly & James Dean
Use your library card or apply for an ecard here to access our digital library!
After inviting his friends over for a pizza party, Pete piles his favorite pepperoni topping on the pie he is making, but when his guests arrive and add their own toppings to the pizza, Pete begins to wonder if his perfect pizza will be ruined.
Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:
- Emphasize all of the words that begin with the /p/ sound as you read through the story together. Ask your little learner to find all of the words that start with letter P.
- Point out that Pete wrote and drew his own party invitations. Invite your little one to pretend to trace the letters on Pete's invitation with their finger.
- Talk about the toppings Pete and his friends add to their pizza. Ask your little one if they would like the same toppings.
SING: Ten Little Vegetables
EXPLORE: Mini Pizza Party
Ingredients:
- English muffins (1 muffin makes 2 mini pizzas)
- Pizza sauce (tomato, pesto, alfredo, olive oil, etc.)
- Toppings of your choice
- Shredded cheese (mozzarella, and monterey jack are common)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 400° F
- Let your little learner know you will make mini pizzas. Talk to them about what they like on their pizza and decide on the toppings together.
- Using the handle of a spoon, split the English muffins in half.
- Ask your little one to spread pizza sauce and cutting the English muffins in half (this can be done easily with the handle end of a spoon).
- Allow your little one to spread pizza sauce on the English muffins. If you are giving multiple options for pasta sauces, encourage your little one to taste each sauce before adding it to their pizza. Talk to your little one about what the different sauces taste like and ask questions like "Which one do you like best?"
- Show your little one how to pinch and sprinkle cheese onto the pizza to build the little muscles in their hands.
- Encourage your child to taste different toppings before putting them on their pizza. While they add the toppings, talk to your little one about the choices they are making. Make observations such as "I notice you're adding mushrooms here", and ask questions like "What do you think would happen if we put more cheese on top?"
- Put mini pizzas on baking sheet and bake until the cheese melts.
- Let the pizzas cool a few minutes, then let your perfect pizza party begin!
