What if you...
encountered another perspective?
Discovered another world?
Met another you?
What might you do?

Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:

  • Encourage your little learner to make their own story for this wordless picture book by asking them what is happening on each page.
  • Ask your little one to help you turn the book and make things right side up for the little girl and her cat as they explore.
  • Point out different items on the pages, and ask your little one to identify them. For example, ask questions like What is that little girl drawing?
  • After reading the book together, ask your little one what they would do if the oval in the story appeared in their room?

EXPLORE: Hole in Paper Art

Kids doing paper art

Materials:

  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Drawing materials (pens, pencils, crayons, markers, paint, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. Cut a hole in the paper you will be using. You can trace a bowl or cup as a guide, or cut the hole freehand.
    1. Try making the hole off-center, making several small holes, or making several holes of varying sizes for a new challenge for your little learner's creativity.
  2. Lay the paper with the hole on top of another piece of paper or piece of cardboard
  3. Explain to your little artist that you're going to be trying a new kind of drawing. Encourage your little artist to create around the hole or include the hole as a part of their artwork.
  4. While your little learner creates, ask them about their art. Questions like "Your art looks great! Can you tell me what's happening in your drawing?" and "What's your favorite part of this picture?" will help build oral language and vocabulary skills, as well as giving you a better understanding of your little one's imagination.
