READ: Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle
Use your library card or apply for an ecard here to access our digital library!
Beep! Beep! Meet Blue! Filled with truck sounds and animal noises, Little Blue Truck is a rollicking homage to the power of friendship and the rewards of helping others.
Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:
- While you read together, encourage your little one to repeat the sounds Little Blue and friends make.
- Periodically ask your little one what they think will happen next in the story. For example, "Oh, no! Dump Truck is stuck. What do you think is going to happen next?"
- Emphasize the rhyming words on each page. Play with the rhyming words by asking your child, "What else rhymes with ____?"
SING: Friend Ship is the Best Ship
EXPLORE: Friendship Bracelets
Materials:
- Beading Materials
- chunky beads
- Dyed uncooked pasta
- Straws in multiple colors, cut in ½ inch pieces
- Pipe cleaners
- Paper
- Markers/crayons
- Tape or glue
Instructions:
- Explain to your child that a friendship bracelet is something we make for and exchange with people who are our friends.
- Invite your little one to create their own friendship bracelets.
- Ask your child how they’re going to start.
- If using multiple materials (beads, pasta, straws) ask your little one which material they want to use first.
- If using one type of material, ask them what color they want to start with and go from there.
- While your little learner creates, talk to them about what they’re making. Ask them questions and make observations about their bracelets. For example, “I see you’re using purple here, what color do you want to use next?”
- If you’re not comfortable with your little one using the smaller materials or they are not available, this activity can also be done with paper and tape or glue.
- Cut paper into strips large enough to wrap around a wrist like a bracelet.
- Allow your little learner to decorate as they'd like using marker/crayons, asking questions like the ones above as they create.
- Use tape or glue to secure the paper strip as a bracelet.
