You'll be as busy as a bee with this week's books and activities!
READ: Buzz, Bee! by Jennifer Szymanski
Use your library card or apply for an ecard here to access our digital library!
Bzzz! Learn all about honey bees through text features such as a vocabulary tree and a wrap-up activity. Kids will be introduced to new words and concepts -- helping them expand their understanding of the world.
Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:
- Read about what bees do on the Vocabulary Tree on page 2. Act out the words with your little one.
- Point to objects such as flowers or the bee's legs, wings, or eyes and ask your little one to name or describe them. If needed, ask questions like these:
- Are bees big or small?
- What color is the flower?
- How many legs does the bee have?
- Look at the pictures with your little learner before reading the text aloud and ask your little one what is happening on the page.
SING: The Bees All Around
(Tune: The Wheels on the Bus)
EXPLORE: Flight of the Bumblebee
Materials
- crayons, colored pencils, or water-soluble paint and paintbrushes
- paper
- pencil or pen
Instructions
- Ask your little one to draw a bee, flowers, and a beehive on different sections of the paper. Encourage any marks or scribbles your little one can make.
- Once the pictures are complete, use the pencil or pen to write the names of the items underneath or beside each picture.
- Draw dotted lines to connect all the pictures.
- Encourage your little one to place their finger on or near the bee picture to start the bee's flight.
- Take turns following the bee's path from flower to hive and back again. Do a bee dance by wiggling your finger then ask your little learner to do the dance too.
