READ: Duncan the Story Dragon by Amanda Driscoll
Use your library card or get a library card here!
Duncan the Dragon loves to read. When he reads a story, his imagination catches fire! Unfortunately . . . so does his book.
Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:
- Point to the books Duncan wants to read then to the illustrations for those books. Ask your little one what they think Duncan's books are about.
- Periodically ask your little learner how they think Duncan feels. Encourage them to talk about why they think Duncan feels various emotions.
- After completing the book, ask your little one if they can remember what the story is about. Encourage your little one in their re-telling with questions like "Do you remember what happened first?" or "What happened next?" Flip through the book to help your little learner remember the story.

EXPLORE: My Little Library Adventures
Materials:
- 10-20 sheets of paper folded in half or quarter sheets
- Pencils
- Crayons or colored pencils
Instructions:
- After a library visit or after reading together, let your little one know that you will create your own books together.
- Ask your little learner which stories they like with questions like these:
- Do you like animals? Which ones?
- Do you want to read about the ocean? What about dinosaurs or monster?
- Using the paper and crayons or colored pencils, encourage your little one to create their own stories by drawing a picture on each page. Scribbles and attempts at letters make the story that much more fun!
- Create as many books as your little learner likes and enjoy stories together from their library.
