Jr. Scholars: Summer Reading--All Together Now!

Oh, my goodness! It's JUNE! That means you're likely out of school, just in time for the Summer Learning Program! The theme this year is All Together Now, and you can do so many things together with old friends and new ones at the Library! Here are just a few events to look forward to this summer: attending a kickoff or closing party at your favorite library with games and prizes for everyone; joining us for fun weekly programs; and the Live! From the Library series, where cool presenters will share amazing things. And of course, you have some free time to read books—we're here to help you find the books you love! We're looking forward to having fun this summer--All Together Now!

#READ: Cheer: A Book to Celebrate Community by Ian Aurora

Cheer Book Cover

Use your library card or apply for an ecard here to access our digital library!

A rhyming celebration of community features a diverse cast of children who invite readers to cheer along as they honor the important contributions of people who help make communities work, from teachers and police officers to librarians and families.

Questions to think about while you read:

  1. Who in your community would you specifically like to cheer for? Why?
  2. Is there a person or job you would cheer for that is not mentioned in the book? Why would you like to cheer for them?
  3. Why do you think it is important to cheer for people in our community?

#PLAY: Games to Play Together

Children Sitting in a Circle Playing

Get a group of friends and family together and play one or all of these games this month!

Steal the Bacon:

You need a ball for this game. Divide into two teams. Each team lines up on an imaginary or marked line opposite each other. A referee places a ball in between the two teams. When the referee says, "GO!" everyone tries to get the ball. Whoever gets the ball has to make it back to their team's line without the other team's members tagging them.

Ice Cube:

An ice cube is needed for every participant in this game (best to be played outside). When a referee says, "GO!" whoever can melt their ice cube the quickest (without putting it in their mouths, stomping on it, or using any equipment) wins.

Hot Potato:

You need a small ball for this game. All players sit in a circle, and one sits in the middle of the circle with their eyes closed. Players in the circle start passing the ball to each other. When the player in the middle of the circle yells ‘hot potato,’ whoever is stuck with the ball becomes the person who sits in the middle for the next round. Alternate play: the person who is stuck with the ball is eliminated each round, until there is one person left, then they become the player in the middle.

#EXPLORE: Collaborate with Craft Sticks

Crafting Sticks

Supplies:

  • Craft sticks (ideally all the same size)
  • Paint, paint markers, and/or permanent markers
  • Cardboard or foam board
  • Glue

Instructions:

  1. Get a group of friends and/or family members together.
  2. Everyone decorates the craft sticks with paint, paint markers, and/or permanent markers.
  3. Work together to arrange the decorated sticks on the cardboard or foam board. Once everyone agrees on the design, glue the sticks to the board.
  4. Admire the work you created together and find a place where everyone can see it!
