Vintage Florida, to Jacksonville and Beyond...

Alligator Farm postcard style painting

#Enter a "Sunshine State of Mind"

The Jacksonville Public Library and The Art Center Co-Operative present "Vintage Florida, to Jacksonville and Beyond..." with art by Lisa Lofton. The exhibit runs October 13 through December 29 in the atrium on the third floor of the Main Library. A reception will be held Wednesday, December 7 from 6-8 p.m. (during First Wednesday Art Walk).

The artist says her current series, "Vintage Florida," was born out of the pandemic and "the need to return to one of my life's happiest times [when] I visited my grandparents in Florida and discovered another world."

"I love to look for the character of an object, place, or time," Lofton mused.

She remembers seeing Florida as "a beautiful adventure with so much to offer a visitor." Many of her "Florida" pieces reflect childhood memories from the 60s as well as her home, the city of Jacksonville. For her, there is more than an intrinsic value in things. She believes "their relationship with a person gives them a new identity that is often sentimental and priceless."

Recently, Lofton was commissioned to do the cover of the newest Historic Life Magazine, put out by the Resident News Group. The magazine is published annually in October as a newcomers guide and is design to attract folks to historic neighborhoods. Check out the latest issue here
