Stanton Memories - Reminiscence of Yesterday
Recently, the Library's Special Collections department received a lovely donation of a 1939 Memories book for Stanton High School. This unique item combines the commemorative aspect of a high school yearbook with the personal style of an end-of-the-year autograph book.
Not only do you get to see photographs of individual students and several athletic teams, but you also have the pleasure of reading thoughtful messages, poems, anecdotes, personal favorites and fun facts about dozens of students.
The 1939 Stanton High School Memories book gives a rare glimpse into the true identities of these young people as well as documentation of a specific place and time in Jacksonville history. Community members and genealogists will be able to go online to view this little treasure and to learn more about both our city's and their own family's special histories.

Search Historical Newspaper Archives
Did you know that Special Collections now has the Florida Times-Union available online dating back to 1883? If you’ve done research with Special Collections in the past, you may remember that issues prior to 1996 were only available on microfilm. This made it very difficult to locate articles if you didn’t know the exact dates you were looking for.
Now customers can log in to Newsbank with their Jacksonville Public Library card – anywhere, anytime – to browse, save, email or print articles. Whether you’re working on a school project, professional research or genealogy goals, the quest for information has become much more efficient!
To start your search, please visit: Florida Times-Union Historical and Current Collection. Note: We also now have online access to Jacksonville Journal from 1901 – 1988. Check out more Newspaper and Magazines like the Beaches Leader and your favorite titles from across the country.
The Genealogy Collection Gets a Refresh
Nearly 300 older volumes of books from the Genealogy Collection were replaced thanks to a generous donation and they are now on the shelves on the fourth floor of the Main Library for everyone to access. Many of the books were volumes from War of the Rebellion: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies and War of the Rebellion: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies.
