Activities
Art Tours of the Main Library
Augusta Savage, Al Held, Kathryn Freeman, Lee Adams, Jerry Uelsmann. Do you know that works by these artists and many more are on permanent display at the Main Library? Come take a 20-minute docent-led tour during Art Walk and rediscover these remarkable paintings, sculptures, and photographs. Tours start every half hour starting at 6 p.m. Meet the docent by the Art Tours sign in the Pajcic Promenade (the entry/hallway on the first floor).
Monthly Zinester Meetup
Do you read zines? Make your own comics? Drop by Zine Zone on the first floor of the Main Library from 6 - 8:30 p.m. These Monthly Zinester Meetups provide a space for creators of self published zines to network, learn skills, do group projects and make art.
Local Art Exhibitions
In the Gallery on the 1st Floor:
"In the past few weeks, records have been broken across Europe, while extreme heat has intensified wildfires and severe weather in the United States. Is this simply nature taking its course, or has our pursuit of modern progress accelerated the problem? Whatever the cause, what should we do now?"
Just over 20 local artists gave their answer to these questions in Temperature Rising, a new exhibition with the The Art Center Cooperative and Jacksonville Artists Guild. Join them for a reception from 5:30 - 8 p.m. (during Art Walk). The exhibition ends August 17.

Are you a fan of modern quilt designs? The Jax Modern Quilt Guild exists to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education and community. They are one of the seven sister guilds that hosts the annual Quiltfest Jacksonville.
Check out the latest exhibit from their members here at the Main Library, now through October 2.
The group will host an opening reception from 6 - 8 p.m. (during August Art Walk).
In the Betty Francis Art Gallery on the 3rd Floor Mezzanine:
Forty years ago, Jessie Cook's first solo art show took place in a library. Like many before her, she decided not to study art in college. However, she's been lucky enough to pursue painting "in between other necessary pursuits." After her first child, she returned to painting. Come what may, it is always something she wants to go back to.
Her still life work often includes objects that she associates with particular people or events that have meaning for her. But, she says, "just as often they're of what's available, pleasing, amenable to interesting lighting."
"Painting seems to me a natural thing to attempt, a means of visually walking around objects or a scene. Sort of like writing an essay - you only find out what you have to say once you've examined the thought you started out with... and you frequently end up somewhere quite unexpected."
