You might not have known it but if you’ve ever been to the Main Library in downtown Jacksonville, you were in the same building as one of Jacksonville Public Library’s most unique features: the Zine Collection. This collection was started in 2009 by the first Jacksonville Public Library Zine Committee, composed of Andrew Coulon, Josh Jubinsky, Matthew Moyer, and Jessica Whittington. In the years since, the collection has grown to include over 2,000 zines from authors all over the country, from Jacksonville to Portland!

The Main Library is proud to host the third annual Duval Comic and Zine Fest in downtown Jacksonville on Saturday, June 15, from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. A celebration of independent publishing featuring local creators of self-published zines, comics, alternative press, and DIY media, the event will feature over 50 tablers, a risograph printing activity, a Writer's Lab workshop, and a Lit Chat with graphic novelist Nate Powell. The event is and all programs are free to attend!

History Chat: Collecting Alan Justiss

This April, Jacksonville Public Library is highlighting the life and poetry of Alan Justiss (1943-2011), a celebrated Jacksonville poet whose works have recently been acquired by our Special Collections department. This panel discussion will be moderated by artist and educator, Nestor Gil. They'll talk about Justiss’ life and legacy, read selections of his poetry, and a preview of an upcoming documentary. An audience Q&A will follow the presentation.

This month, adults (18+) can join us from 7 - 8:30 p.m. in the Lounge at 303 North for a special Jax Poetry Fest Open Mic Night sponsored by Hope at Hand, Inc., with emcee Taryn "LoveReigns" Wharwood. UNF Professor Andrew Kozlowski also returns for a zine poetry-making workshop during Zinester Meetup.

This month, the City of Jacksonville Planning and Development Department will be at the Main Library to talk about bike and pedestrian safety and give out free bicycle helmets and other safety materials. Plus, we're looking for 5-20 courageous adult players for a logic game in the Lounge at 303 North called Blood on the Clocktower!
