Jacksonville Public Library offers monthly 45-minute outreach sessions designed especially for youth in afterschool settings. These programs introduce students to engaging, high-interest books and include activities and games that help reinforce a love of reading. Our goal is to support literacy, spark curiosity, and connect students with books in a relaxed, accessible way.
We offer grade-specific sessions that blend reading, hands-on learning, and fun for up to 25 students at a time.
K–2nd Grade: Each program features a readaloud with highlighted vocabulary, a nonfiction tie-in, and a game or activity inspired by the book.
Sample program: students read Chez Bob, learn about alligators, and play a freeze tag game based on the story.
3rd–5th Grade: These programs include a book, a nonfiction component, and game or creative activity.
Sample program: Students are introduced to I Survived: Hurricane Katrina, learn about weather events and hurricane preparedness, and play a relay game where participants practice building a disaster kit.
6th–8th Grade: Middle School programs are thematically centered around a book, with activities that encourage collaboration, cooperation, and creativity.
Sample program: Students are introduced to the graphic novel Into the Heartlands (starring Black Panther), work together to create jam comics, and compete in team-based mini quests.
