Volunteer Stays Busy By Helping Out at Library

Photo of a cat called Pop Tart.

Sandra has been volunteering with the University Park Library since November 2024 and has contributed over 170 hours in that time. As a former library employee, Sandra has a strong knowledge base of the collection and helps in a variety of roles including shelving, craft prep, and maintaining appearance standards of the shelves.

Sandra wanted to highlight her cat and reading buddy, Pop Tart. He likes to cuddle up as she reads in her chair. She adopted him after he was found by a neighbor.

What inspired you to volunteer for the library?

A co-worker at my previous employer and I were discussing how her mother in south Florida kept busy. Volunteering at the library was one of her mother's activities. I thought that was a good idea and since reading is one of my pastimes, I volunteered.

What is the most rewarding part about volunteering for the library?

I enjoy discussing books and DVDs with the staff. We share resource recommendations, impressions, and critiques.

What is your favorite library service?

The "hold" feature for me is one of the best ideas yet!!!

What collection is your favorite to shelve in and why?

My favorite genre is mystery. Shelving in mystery gives me an opportunity to keep track of what is on the shelf and to select authors that I have not selected in the past. I also do a significant amount of shelving DVDs. While shelving DVDs is not a favorite activity, it does provide me with an opportunity to keep track of what is on the shelf and to select the next week's movies that I want to view.
