Volunteer Finds Crafting Joy at Bill Brinton Murray Hill Library

Smiling library volunteer Lara with her dog.

Lara has been volunteering at Bill Brinton Murray Hill Library since April 2025 and has contributed over 47 hours in that time. She has helped with all our big events, from Summer Reading to Murray Hill-O-Ween, and pitches in with our weekly craft prep. Lara is a consistent friend in the library that we see often, and we can always rely on her to come in when we need help the most.

What inspired you to volunteer for the library?

The library was one of my favorite destinations growing up; it always felt exciting and full of possibilities. After learning so much at my local library in Michigan, I wanted to give back to the library and community here in Jacksonville.

What is the most rewarding part about volunteering for the library?

Having opportunities to plug into the community and engage with events like the summer reading kickoff or Murray Hill-O-Ween.

Is there a book you recommend people read?

White Teeth by Zadie Smith. It’s a multi-generational story that provides a unique and very human perspective to immigration, family, and belonging. Zadie Smith is an incredibly talented writer and I recommend any book that can make me laugh out loud and feel deeply all in one go. It’s a long read, but totally worth it.

What has been your favorite things to do at the library?

I love preparing the craft projects and participating in the larger community events.
