Kim H is one of Bradham & Brooks Library's newest volunteers, and she is already making a big impact. Since October, she has assisted with a variety of activities, including prepping the crafts for children and adults, engaging with and helping customers with the crafts, decorating the branch for the seasons, and making the buttons that are given out at the Reader's Advisory training. Kim also has taken a special interest in the teen hygiene cart and donated several travel size items, which made a big difference!
What inspired you to volunteer for the library?
Reading is a huge part of my life, and I love nothing more than sharing a good book and discussing it with others. I chose to volunteer here because the library is such a positive space for learning, and I wanted to give back to a place that provides so much for our neighborhood.
What is the most rewarding part about volunteering for the library?
I’m a crafter at heart, so the most rewarding part is the physical process of making these programs happen. I take a lot of pride in the preparation, knowing that my 'behind-the-scenes' support allows kids and adults to walk in and immediately start creating. It’s satisfying to see the library come alive through art and knowing I helped build that experience.
What books and/or authors would you recommend to a friend?
If a friend is looking for a mystery they can really sink into, I always recommend Walter Mosley, specifically the Ezekiel 'Easy' Rawlins series. I love the mystery adventures he goes on, but what’s even better is how Mosley captures Los Angeles in the 40s and 50s. They aren't just detective stories; they're a look at history through a very specific, gritty lens.
Is there anything you wish more people in the community knew about the Library and what we offer?
I really wish the community knew that the library is here to help them blossom. It’s more than just a building; it’s a place designed for you to explore what you’re capable of. Whether you’re coming in for a craft project, a great mystery novel, or to learn something new, the opportunities to grow and explore here are endless. It’s a space where you can walk in with a little curiosity and leave with a brand-new skill or a fresh perspective.
