Book Lovers Unite!

Book Lovers Day

Do you love the look, touch, and smell of a leather bound classic? Does the thought of browsing the stacks at your local library thrill and delight you? Well, then… you might just be a bibliophile! Book Lovers Day is all about YOU and those books you just can't seem to get enough of! So, let's celebrate with some booklists, book clubs, and a few other fun things the Library offers you book lovers out there.

Books About Gender Non-Conformity for Youth

Youth Booklist

Teen Booklist

For gender non-conforming children and teens, or those who don't quite fit in the boy/girl binary: it can be hard to find role models or language to express their identity or feelings. Many of the books in this list are written by authors and/or include characters who identify as non-binary, gender non-conforming, or transgender. Many also provide tips for parents who want to start an age-appropriate discussion about gender identity and expression.

Books That Go Beyond The Binary

Beyond the Binary: Books about Gender Non-Conformity

First celebrated in 2012, International Non-Binary People’s Day is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate those who do not identify exclusively as male or female (masculine or feminine). Check out the blog for a breakdown of terms and pronouns as well as tips and resources for parents, friends, coworkers, and allies. You'll also find booklists for youth, teens, and adults with authors and characters who identify as non-binary, gender non-conforming, or transgender.

Celebrate Literacy Week: Youth For Change

Youth for Change youth activism booklist

January 25-29 is 2021 Celebrate Literacy Week in Florida! Created to promote literacy and excellent reading habits in the students of Florida, this year’s theme was “Humanity tells a story: What’s YOUR chapter?” The youth of today are not just “future leaders” – many are effectively advocating for and affecting change right now. Thanks in part of social media and technology, these children and teens are using their voice, tech-savvy, and social influence to bring about positive change in their schools, communities, and the country at large. Examples of youth activists, inventors, business owners, and thought leaders are abundant and growing.

Treat Your Pets Like Presidential Pets

Presidential Pets

To celebrate National "Dress Up Your Pet Day" (January 14th), we put together a fun booklist of some of the highest-profile pets in the United States. Over the years, they've become some of our favorite White House residents and - through sheer cuteness - have won the hearts of a nation. Of course, if you want to celebrate the day at home: consider a visit to the groomer or dress your furry friends up in fun or fashionable outfits. With the cold weather we've been having lately, they might actually appreciate a cozy sweater! So, dress them up, let them strut, and let the children act as their personal paparazzi. Whatever you do, though: make sure your fur babies are safe and comfortable. And have fun reading!

International Human Rights Day

International Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10 — the day the United Nations General Assembly, in 1948, proclaimed the inalienable rights to which everyone is entitled as a human being and adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The purpose of the document was to create equal opportunities for all - regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status - and to re-build the world through this lens of interconnectedness and shared humanity.
