Notice to Customers About Library Material Delays

You may have noticed some delays in how quickly new titles are arriving on our shelves recently. We’ve put together this FAQ to answer some of your questions and hopefully address some concerns if you’re waiting for books. If you have a specific question, please call 904-255-2665 or visit the Ask A Librarian Help Center to chat with or email us.

Why are new books taking longer to arrive?

Jacksonville Public Library, like thousands of libraries across the country, has been affected by the recent closure of Baker & Taylor, our longtime book wholesaler. This unexpected industrywide change has caused delays in how quickly newly published materials reach our shelves.

Is the Library still ordering new materials?

Yes. New materials are arriving, but in smaller quantities than usual while we transition to new vendors. We are prioritizing items with the highest customer demand, including titles with long hold lists and new releases.

What is the Library doing to reduce delays?

Our staff are working hard behind the scenes to keep new materials moving, including:

Ordering a wider variety of titles in smaller quantities to help reduce hold times

  • Prioritizing high-demand and time-sensitive materials, such as new releases
  • Adding catalog records for forthcoming titles (including New York Times bestsellers) before they arrive so customers can place holds early

These steps help ensure that customers continue to see new materials added to the catalog regularly.

When will ordering return to normal?

We're still working on figuring out our new normal. We are currently finalizing contracts with new vendors. Once those are in place, we hope to resume large-scale ordering, though receiving and processing new materials will require a different process than before. We will share updates on our website as more information becomes available.

What hasn’t been affected by this issue?

Media (such as DVDs and CDs) and large print materials were not affected, and customers should continue to see typical availability in those formats.

Digital materials were also not impacted. You can continue to enjoy e-books and e-audiobooks through Libby, Hoopla, and our other digital services without interruption.

Can I still suggest a title for the Library to purchase?

Yes. You can continue to use our Suggest a Purchase form. Please note that physical items may take longer to arrive than usual. When available, digital editions may be fulfilled more quickly - done easily using the "Notify me" tags in Libby.

How can customers help?

Your patience means a great deal as we work through this transition period. Our team is doing everything possible to keep new titles coming in and to place them into customers’ hands as quickly as we can.
