# Renewal Limits Update
To help keep library materials moving and available for everyone, the Library is updating how many times physical items can be renewed beginning February 1, 2026.
Why is the library changing the renewal limit?
We’re updating the renewal limit to help library materials move back into circulation more quickly. This change will reduce wait times for popular items and ensure more materials are available on library shelves for browsing and checkout.
What is changing?
Starting February 1, 2026, physical library items can be renewed up to two times if there are no holds on the item. Previously, items could be renewed up to five times.
When does this change take effect?
The new renewal limit takes effect on February 1, 2026.
Does this apply to items I already have checked out?
Yes. On February 1, renewal limits for items already checked out will automatically adjust to the new two-renewal limit.
Why did I receive a notice that my item is due?
If an item has already been renewed more than two times, the system will recognize that it has reached the new limit and send a due-date notice. This is an automatic system update and not a penalty.
Can I still renew items if no one is waiting for them?
You can renew physical items up to two times as long as there are no holds. Automatic renewals will continue to work as they do now, up to the new two-renewal limit. After that, the item will need to be returned so others can access it.
What should I do if I’m not finished with an item?
Once the item is returned, you’re welcome to check it out again if it’s available or place a hold to get back in line.
Does this change affect digital materials?
No. This update applies only to physical library items. Digital materials follow separate lending rules.
Does this change apply to all physical items?
It applies to all physical items with the exception of lendable technology and Interlibrary loans.
