# Read Any Good Mysteries Lately?

Trying to track down your next read? This month, see what the mystery genre has to offer.  Whether you like cozy mysteries and amateur sleuths, or you're looking for something a bit more thrilling... Our librarians always have some great recommendations for you to uncover.

While all cozy mysteries involve one or more amateur sleuths, not all "amateur sleuths" fall into the cozy category. Usually with cozies, the stakes are lower. One popular example is the Hannah Swensen Mystery series by Joanna Fluke. It served as the basis for the Murder She Baked television film series on the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries channel.

Another great example is The Thursday Murder Club about a an irrepressible group of retirees who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun. A Netflix film adaptation premiered in August of 2025, starring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie.

In Case You Missed It

Hey, mystery fans! Did you know Mia P. Manansala joined us for a Lit Chat Interview a few years ago? She is a writer and book coach from Chicago who uses humor (and murder) to explore aspects of the Filipino diaspora, queerness, and her millennial love for pop culture.

Check out this interview and others you might have missed on our YouTube playlist of past Lit Chat Interviews. Or, you can always listen to the episode on our Completely Booked podcast.

Other authors for psychological thriller tans: Greer Hendricks, Liv Constantine, Paula Hawkins, Alex Michaelides, Karin Slaughter, Tana French, J.P. Delaney, B.A. Paris, Lisa Unger, and Fiona Barton.

In addition to sub-genres of mystery, you can also explore translated works from other countries. Japanese mysteries and thrillers, for example, have become pretty popular! Do you like solving puzzles? Often part of the honkaku tradition, these novels typically emphasize logical deduction and fair play (with clues provided to the reader).
