A Tale of My Cameras

Jacksonville: A Tale of My City, a new exhibit at the Main Library, explores Jacksonville’s past and present through the lenses of over a dozen local photographers. In addition to the images on the library’s walls, the exhibit shines a spotlight on the evolution of cameras. Featured photographer Cheryl McCain has generously loaned her expansive vintage camera collection to the Jax Makerspace Gallery for display during the exhibit’s run.

Back to the Past

Jacksonville, the largest city in Florida, is a jewel of the Sunshine State that has changed so much over the years. Founded in 1791, it is important for Jacksonville to have an abundance of photographs to archive the city’s rich history. By viewing old photos of Jacksonville, people can learn about the history of the city and how much it has changed from its founding to the present. That’s where the Jacksonville Neighborhood Photo Project comes in.

We went to expert Susan Mankowski, our Early Childhood Learning Specialist, to discover why it’s extra important to keep kids reading during the summer and ways to prevent the “summer slide.”

GED Graduate Back On Track

Dennis Hoffman’s education was derailed when he quit school to help take care of his teenage sister’s children. Even though he dropped out after failing ninth grade, he never gave up on his dream to continue his education “one day.” That day finally came when Dennis enrolled in GED studies through LEAP—Library Enhanced Access Program—at the library’s Center for Adult Learning (CAL).
