Teen Volunteer Finds Joy in Making the Argyle Library a Fun Place for Kids

A hand holding 2 books: Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Diary of a Wimpy Kid Hot Mess.

Rashamar started volunteering at Argyle Library in February 2026 and steadily comes in every Monday and Tuesday. He has contributed 70 hours to date. Like many of the teen volunteers, Rashamar spends most of his time shelving materials, straightening the shelves, and helping to prep one of the Children’s Department upcoming craft projects, which usually involves finding a nice quiet out of the way spot and cutting out lots of shapes and other things.

Note: Rashamar requested that we show some of his enduring favorite books in lieu of his photo.

What inspired you to volunteer for the library?

The main reason was to earn volunteer hours, but to also be able to help out in the community. The library seems to do so much to help out the public, so it was nice to help them do that and to volunteer somewhere that seems so helpful to others. And after volunteering here for a while, it seems like a good choice.

What is the most rewarding part about volunteering for the library?

Again, the hours, *laugh* but also being able to see such a variety of different books was nice. It also gave me a better understanding of the library, how it works, and why people keep wanting to visit. People seem to really like visiting the library and so many seem to need the stuff it offers, like computers, books, or just some quiet time.

What are some of your favorite books or genres and why?

Fantasy books and action books mostly. I used to read Percy Jackson and Harry Potter when I was a kid, and I still read a lot of manga and graphic novels now. Really, I read a variety of books, I read a graphic novel the other day that really reminded me of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. But I also like to read detective mystery books too. Really, a lot of variety.

What has been your favorite thing you have done at the Library, either volunteering or as a patron?

While volunteering, I really liked all the arts and crafts prep. It was fun to see all the cool stuff the kids would be making and to make a couple of them myself. The shelving was nice too, but some of that non-fiction could be confusing. When I was younger I used to like to come to the library to read. It was a good quiet place to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Percy Jackson, or whatever else I was reading then. It’s nice to volunteer in a library now and to think that maybe I’m making some other kid’s visit here fun.
