Illustrations and simple, onomatopoeic text capture a busy day in the life of a large and diverse family of Australian animals.
Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:
- Say the sounds in the book and ask your little one to repeat them.
- Encourage your little one to look at the illustrations and ask them what they think is happening in the book.
- Move the way the animals in the book move. As you move, talk with your little one about different movements. For example, say "Let's hop like the kangaroo."

We can jump, jump, jump.
We can hop, hop, hop.
We can clap, clap, clap.
We can stop, stop, stop.
We can shake our heads for yes.
We can shake our heads for no.
We can bend our knees slowly
and sit down just so!

Materials
- 2-3 sheets of paper cut or torn in half
- Crayons
- Marker, pen, or dark color crayon
- Optional - scissors
Instructions
- Using the marker, pen, or dark color crayon, write the names of different movements such as hop, twist, bend, and wiggle on the bottom of the pieces of paper.
- Just above the word, ask your little one to draw what they think each movement looks like (Scribbles are OK).
- Once the pictures are complete, lay the them on the floor in a pattern of your choice.
- Have fun moving in different ways! Point to the first picture and say the word below it. Ask your little learner to repeat the word then do the movement together.
- Repeat step 4 as you move from picture to picture.
