Little Learners: Love

There are so many things to love. Yourself, your family, the world. Join us this week as we celebrate love!

#READ: I Love You Too by Ziggy Marley

I Love You Too Book Cover

Use your library card or apply for an ecard here to access our digital library!

Based on song lyrics by the author, this volume illustrates many of the ways love is expressed by exploring children's relationships with parents, grandparents, and nature.

Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:

  • Sing the book to the tune of Ziggy Marley's song of the same title.
  • Encourage your little one to sing the repeated line "I love you too, I love you too. I tell you, I love you. I love you too, I love you too. I love you" with you.
  • Introduce the American Sign Language sign for "I love you" to your little one. American Sign Language is a real language where we use our hands, face, and bodies to communicate.
    • Have your little one open one hand and then gently help them fold down their middle and ring fingers, keep their pinky, pointer finger, and thumb outstretched. See if they can recreate this ASL sign (they may continue to need help) when you read "I love you" in the book.

#SING: I Love Me!

(Tune: Head, Shoulders, Knees, & Toes)

I love my head, shoulders, knees, and toes,
Knees and toes.

My head, shoulders, knees, and toes,

Knees and toes.

I love my eyes and ears and mouth and nose.

I love my head, shoulders, knees, and toes,
Knees and toes!

#EXPLORE: Love Potion

Little boy performing science experiment

Today we will be experimenting with kitchen materials, but we can't actually drink our potion. Be sure to help your child with this activity and make sure they keep the ingredients out of their mouths.

Materials:

  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Red food coloring
  • 2 spoons
  • Several cups (clear/see-through if possible)
  • 2 regular sized bowls
  • Tray with edges to catch leaks

Instructions:

  1. Fill one bowl half full with baking soda.
  2. Fill another bowl half full with vinegar.
  3. Mix red food coloring into the vinegar until it is the desired color.
  4. Set several cups and the two bowls on top of a tray to catch spills.
  5. Encourage your little one to use the spoons to scoop up the vinegar and the baking soda and combine them in the cups. This will create a fizzing reaction.
  6. Encourage them to continue playing and experimenting, adding different amounts of vinegar and baking soda together.
