Fall is coming! Join us this week as we leap into learning about autumn.

#READ: Pete the Cat Falling for Autumn by Kimberly & James Dean

Realizing how much he appreciates everything the autumn season has to offer, an ever-groovy Pete the Cat participates in corn mazes, hay rides and apple picking.

Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:

  • Talk about how autumn and fall are both names for this time of year and ask your little one what they like about autumn.
  • Point out words that begin with the same letter throughout the book (we recommend F, P, or S!)
  • Count the things Pete puts in his backpack.

#SING: Leaves on the Trees

(Tune: The Wheels on the Bus)

#EXPLORE: Leaf Art

Children painting

Materials:

  • Leaves (of different shapes and sizes if possible)
  • Fall colors of paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Glue
  • Newspaper/Disposable tablecloth/Something to cover surface with
  • Paper plate or paint tray
  • Open-ended art materials such as googly
  • Optional: Modge Podge – this makes it easier to paint the leaves and also preserves the leaves if you want to keep this activity for a while.

Instructions:

  1. Put down protection for table
  2. Lay materials put on table
  3. Invite your little one to make whatever they would like with the materials
  4. Talk to your little one about their creations and decisions. Having a conversation about your child's art helps them become more aware of choices and actions, allows for verbal expression, and boosts their vocabulary.
  5. Try saying, "Tell me more about this," rather than, "What a beautiful house you drew." You may just learn that what you thought was a house, is actually, "a friendly monster ready to play with his friends."
  6. Ask questions to encourage reflection on the process. "Why did you decide to use purple over here?" Or, "How did you figure out how to attach those pieces to the paper?" You can also share observations on what you see. "I see that you used multiple strips of tape." Or, "I noticed that you mix very thin lines, with large wide ones."
  7. Remember, there is no right or wrong way when it comes to process art projects for kids.
