Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:

  • Explain that the title is the name of the book. Explain what an author and illustrator does, and that sometimes the same person is the author and the illustrator. Use your finger to show your little ones that you read from left right.
  • Help your little readers to make connections. What do they already know about bugs? Can you connect the story to a past experience, or another book you have read about bugs?
  • Move your bodies like the bugs in the story as you read (e.g., hop like a grasshopper).
  • Ask your little ones to name the different bugs or point to them as you read.
  • Explore the Bug-O-Meter at the end of the story. Answer the questions together such as "Can it fly?" and "Where does it live?”.

#SING: Sing along and transform from a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly!

The Life of a Butterfly (Tune: Skip to my Lou)

I'm a caterpillar, wiggle with me,

I'm a caterpillar, wiggle with me,

I'm a caterpillar, wiggle with me,

What'll I be my darlin'?

A chrysalis, now sleep like me,

A chrysalis, now sleep like me,

A chrysalis, now sleep like me,

What'll I be my darlin'?

A butterfly, come fly with me,

A butterfly, come fly with me,

A butterfly, come fly with me,

What'll I be my darlin'?

Now all together let's do all three!

A caterpillar, a chrysalis, a butterfly, three!

Move your body like this with me,

The life of a butterfly darlin'!

#EXPLORE: Plant Painting

Go on a nature walk with your little ones. Gather materials that you will use to create your plant paintings (e.g., flowers, plants, leaves). You’ll use these items you find outside in place of a paintbrush. Provide paint and paper and let your children dip items found outdoors into paint and create their plant paintings as they would like.

You’ll need:

  • Flowers, plants, twigs, or other outdoor items
  • Paint
  • Paper or paper plate

#JOIN: Adventure awaits us this week as we explore the great outdoors!

Little Readers: N is for Nature! This literacy-based program is for children from birth to pre-k and their families. We will sing, talk, read, write, and play together to develop the pre-literacy skills your little ones need to get ready to read and write. Let’s explore the great outdoors with Explorers of the Wild by Cale Atkinson and Firefly Home by Jane Clarke.

Monday, October 5, 2020 – 10 am

Little Movers & Shakers: Let’s get the wiggles out! This music-based program is for children from birth to pre-k and their families. Through books, songs, and movement activities we will build pre-literacy skills. Get ready to dance like a bug as we read Bee Dance by Rick Chrustowski and Pete the Cat and the Itsy Bitsy Spider by James Dean.

Each week we will use an instrument to sing a song and explore sounds and movement. This week we will be using a scarf. Grab a scarf, or a towel, t-shirt, or anything that you can wave around in the air and get ready to dance.

Tuesday, October 6, 2020 – 1 pm

Friday, October 9, 2020 – 10 am

Little Explorers: It’s planting time! This exploration-based program is for children from birth to pre-K and their families. We will use books to nurture curiosity, create, and discover the world around us. This week we will read Plant the Tiny Seed by Christie Matheson and Bloom Boom! by April Pulley Sayre. After investigating our theme through stories, songs, and a game we will conclude our program with a hands-on activity.

Each week we will use a variety of materials that you may have at home for our exploration activity. This week’s needed materials are:

  • Leave(s) from outdoors
  • Paper
  • Crayon with wrapper removed
