Starting with a pair of yellow mittens, a purple hippopotamus prepares to bundle up to go outside and play in the snow.

Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:

  • Before reading, talk about what clothes we wear during the winter time.
    • Ask your little one what clothes they wear to stay warm outside.
    • What do they think the hippo will put on to stay warm?
  • Before reading the colors, ask your little one if they can tell you what the color is. Then run your finger underneath the text as you read the name of the color to them.
  • At the end of the book, follow the instructions to flip back through the pages and use your fingers to count how many times you see each item.
  • After reading, see if your little one can recreate the hippo's outfit with their own winter clothes.
    • What did the hippo wear?
    • What colors are their winter clothes?

Materials:

  • Various winter and summer clothes
    • (e.g., shirts, pants, hats, shoes, scarves, socks, gloves, jackets, bathing suits)

Instructions:

  • Talk about the clothing we wear in summer and winter.
    • How is different? How is it the same?
  • Using their summer and winter clothes, ask your little one to assemble different outfits they can wear. If they'd like, they can practice putting them on themselves.
    • What should you wear to swim at the beach?
    • What should you wear to the park when it is warm?
    • What should you wear when it is a little cold outside?
    • What about when it is REALLY cold and maybe snowing?
  • Help them create a full outfit with questions.
    • What shoes would you wear with this?
    • How will you keep your hands/head/neck/legs warm?
    • Can this get wet in the water?
  • For more, encourage them to add accessories like glasses or bags.
