Little Learners (Birth - Age 4): Getting Creative

Let's get creative! Read this week's books to explore a few ways to create art.

#READ – Ellie by Mike Wu

Ellie Book CoverUse your library card or apply for an ecard here to access our digital library!

The zoo is closing! Ellie and her friends want to save their home, but Ellie's just a baby elephant, and she doesn't know what she can do to help. While the other animals are busy working, Ellie finds a brush and some paints, and gives the zoo a big splash of color!

Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:

  • Ask your little learner which sound mice, lions, and birds make. Run your finger under the words "squeak," "roar," and "chirp." This will connect the animal sounds to the words on the page. Practice making animal sounds together.
  • Ask your little one if they can guess how Ellie feels throughout the book. For example, ask them to look at the picture and guess how Ellie feels when it seems like everyone has a talent but her.
  • Talk about the pictures. Ask your child to identify what Ellie uses to paint pictures, the colors she uses, and what is in the pictures she makes.
