The Jacksonville Public Library is cooking up some fun this week as we explore food. We have all the ingredients for a week full of learning for you and your little chefs.
READ: Feast For 10
Use your library card or apply for an ecard to access our digital library!
Come along with this family as they take a trip to the grocery store, make a meal together, and practice counting. Sharing alphabet, counting, and shape books are ways you can increase your child's letter knowledge and get them ready to read.
Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:
- Tie the book to your child’s life experiences. Have you been to the grocery store together? What do you like to buy?
- Point out the numbers in the story. Count along as you read and point to each item as you count.
- Ask your child to name the items on the pages.
- Guess what food the family will buy next.
- Talk about the different foods the family is buying for the feast. What foods do you like to eat?
SING: If You Like Tomatoes and You Know It
Clap your hands, stomp your feet, and shout hooray as you sing about foods from our story.
(Tune: If you’re Happy and You Know it)
If you like tomatoes and you know it, clap your hands.
If you like tomatoes and you know it, clap your hands.
If you like tomatoes and you know it, and you really want to show it,
If you like tomatoes and you know it, clap your hands. (Clap hands)
If you like pickles and you know it, stomp your feet.
If you like pickles and you know it, stomp your feet.
If you like pickles and you know it, and you really want to show it,
If you like pickles and you know it, stomp your feet. (Stomp feet)
If you like potatoes and you know it, shout hooray.
If you like potatoes and you know it, shout hooray.
If you like potatoes and you know it, and you really want to show it,
If you like potatoes and you know it, shout hooray! (Shout hooray!)
EXPLORE: Little Chefs
Time to put on your chef hats! Explore with your senses together by tasting, touching, smelling, listening, and watching as you cook up some fun in the kitchen.
- Read a recipe. Even if you’re making something as simple as a sandwich write a recipe for your little ones to follow.
- Talk about what comes first, next, and last.
- Practice measuring! Let your little one do as much as they can by themselves.
- Introduce new words like recipe and ingredients.
- Build hand strength by allowing your children to mix, tear, scoop, pour, and cut (with assistance).
- Ask your little one to help you clean up when you are done.
