#READ: Hooray for Today! by Brain Won

Hooray for Today Book Cover

Use your library card or apply for an ecard here to access our digital library!

When the moon is up, Owl is wide awake and ready for fun: "Hooray for today! Would you like to play?" But everyone says, "Not now! I'm sleepy!" Owl's playday gets lonely fast as each friend turns her away--until sunrise, when Owl discovers a friendly surprise.

Increase pre-literacy skills as you read together:

  • Run your finger under the title as you read it. Whenever owl says, "Hooray for today!" run your fingers under the words and ask your little learner to repeat them.
  • Prompt your little one to guess what will happen in the story by asking if they think owl will find friends to play with.
  • Before reading about each of owl's friends, ask your little learner to identify the animal and the sound or motion the animal makes.

#SING : Day & Night

(Tune: If You're Happy and You Know It)

Oh, the sun shines in the sky, in the sky.

Oh, the sun shines in the sky, in the sky.

Oh, the sun shines in the sky.

You can see it way up high.

Oh, the sun shines in the sky, in the sky.

Soon the day will turn to night, turn to night.

Soon the day will turn to night, turn to night.

Soon the day will turn to night

And I will curl up tight.

Soon the day will turn to night, turn to night.

Stars are twinkling in the sky, in the sky.

Stars are twinkling in the sky, in the sky.

Stars are twinkling in the sky.

I can see them way up high.

Stars are twinkling in the sky, in the sky.

#EXPLORE: Day or Night?

Child painting on paper

Materials:

  • plain paper plate
  • water-soluble paint and paintbrush or crayons

 Ways to explore:

  • Paint or draw the sun on one side of the plate and the moon on the other side. Allow painted sun and moon pictures to dry.
  • Ask whether we see things such as stars or rainbows in the daytime or nighttime. Continue the activity by naming more things seen during the day and at night. Have your little one paint or draw their answers on the appropriate side of the plate.
