Junior Scholars: Movement & Balance

What do you think of when you hear the word "movement?" Do you picture a busy, fast pace, like running around? What if movement could be slow and calming? Join us as we explore how movement and balance can be found in nature in our science, art, and Junior Reader programs!

#READ: Be A Tree! by Maria Gianferrari

Be A Tree Book Cover

Stand tall.

Stretch your branches to the sun.

Be a tree!

We are all like trees: our spines, trunks; our skin, bark; our hearts giving us strength and support, like heartwood. We are fueled by air and sun.

And, like humans, trees are social. They "talk" to spread information; they share food and resources. They shelter and take care of one another. They are stronger together.

#PLAY: Rock, Tree, Bridge

Children Standing Like Trees
  1. Players get into groups of three and line up.
  2. The first person in each line becomes a rock (do Child’s Pose)
  3. Then the second person jumps over the rock and becomes a tree (do Tree Pose)
  4. The third person jumps over the rock, goes around the tree, and becomes a bridge (do Downward-Facing Dog Pose).
  5. The first person (who was the rock) gets up and goes around the tree and underneath the bridge.
  6. Repeat the pattern.

#EXPLORE: Balloon Tennis

Balloons in a bucket | Balloon Tennis

Supplies:

  1. 1 bag of balloons (inflated with air)
  2. 1 fly swatter per player
  3. 1 basket (or box) per player

Let's head outside and get moving!

  • Once all the balloons have been blown up, put them outside near a basket.
  • Can you fill the basket without using your hands?

Make it a team sport!

  • Divide your group into two teams.
  • Place a basket at either end of a lawn with the balloons in the middle.
  • The team that can get the most balloons into their basket wins!

Battle Royale!

  • Give each player their own basket and arrange them along the perimeter of a lawn with the balloons in the middle.
  • It's every player for themselves, with the person who can get the most balloons in their basket as the winner.
