Junior Scholars: Food & Cooking

Though I'm not a fan of the cleanup, I enjoy cooking for family and friends. Food can be many things, from exciting to comforting, but most of all, I love how food brings people together! Do you like to cook? What's your favorite food? Join us as we explore the yummy (and funny) side of Food and Cooking!

#READ: Our Little Kitchen by Jillian Tamaki

Our Little Kitchen Book Cover

In this lively, rousing picture book from Caldecott Honoree Jillian Tamaki, a crew of resourceful neighbors comes together to prepare a meal for their community. With a garden full of produce, a joyfully chaotic kitchen, and a friendly meal shared at the table, Our Little Kitchen is a celebration of full bellies and looking out for one another. Bonus materials include recipes and an author's note about the volunteering experience that inspired the book.

#PLAY: Marshmallow & Spaghetti Tower Race

Marshmallow Spaghetti Tower

Supplies:

  • uncooked spaghetti noodles
  • mini-marshmallows
  • timer

Instructions:

  1. Divide your group into teams
  2. Give each team a pack of spaghetti and a pack of marshmallows.
  3. The goal for each team is to build the tallest free-standing tower in a set amount of time – five minutes for older kids, ten minutes for younger children.
  4. Use a measuring tape to verify which tower is the tallest.

Note: for more of a challenge, have the teams race with their finished tower to the other side of the room.

#EXPLORE: Pine Cone Pineapples

Pine Cone Pineapples

Supplies:

  • Pine cones, washed and dried
  • Yellow acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes of different sizes
  • Two shades of green construction paper OR white paper and green crayons
  • Liquid glue or hot glue gun (with supervision)
  • scissors

Instructions:

  1. Use the paintbrushes to paint the entire pine cone yellow. You may have to use a smaller paintbrush to get into the tighter spaces. Allow to dry completely.
  2. While waiting for the pine cone to dry, draw long, thin leaves on the green paper and cut out with scissors (alternatively, you can draw leaves on white paper and color with green crayons). Here's what you will need:
    1. 5-6 leaves half the height of the pine cone (half of these leaves should be dark green, half lighter green)
    2. 5-6 leaves as tall as the pine cone (half of these leaves should be dark green, half lighter green)
  3. Using liquid glue (or hot glue, if supervised), glue the smaller leaves around the top of the pine cone, as shown. Alternate the dark and light-colored leaves.
  4. Glue the taller leaves around the smaller leaves, also alternating the dark and light-colored leaves. If leaves look too large, trim them.
  5. Use your fingers or a pencil to lightly curl the leaves.
