Jax Makes 2018

Wednesday, September 19, 2018

Calling all makers, artisans, and creatives galore! Join us for this year's Jax Makes on Saturday, Oct. 13, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Main Library. Shop local vendors, participate in hands-on making activities, and learn the tools necessary to turn your own hobby into a business. We’ll have a variety of makers present at this event, including woodworkers, fiber artists, soap and candle makers, jewelers, and artists of every persuasion!

If you’re a maker looking to turn your passion into a monetized side-hustle, we have the workshop for you! Business and web design guru Elizabeth Pampalone will lead a class on developing a business plan. This class is fit for beginners who are itching to set up shop! The wordsmiths in the crowd will love award-winning local author Nikesha Williams’ class on Writing Your Passion.

Zythophiles—a.k.a. lovers of beer—are sure to enjoy the Home Brewing Workshop, brought to the Jacksonville Public Library by Just Brew It. This introductory course will cover ingredients and equipment needed to brew beer at home. “This would be a good presentation for beginners or someone who has not brewed in a long time,” says Ken Stevens of Just Brew It. “Attendees will gain a basic understanding of the brewing process.”

Homeowners interested in turning their humble abodes into works of art can enjoy a Do-It-Yourself demo with Eco Relics, an architectural salvage company dedicated to repurposing materials for homes in Jacksonville. In this workshop, participants will learn how to make bead board frames. “We’ll be using various pieces of reclaimed bead board to create frames for pieces of vintage decorative ceiling tin,” says Tracy Rigdon. This project can also be used to frame album covers, art work, photographs, and more!

We’ll also feature a class on DJing with local DJ GeeXella. Aspiring disc jockeys will learn to scratch and more. GeeXella, a DJ and musician with a social justice focus, will field questions from curious participants.

Jax Makes will feature a slew of fun activities for the little ones, including a DJ demonstration. DJ Hiztory will teach three basic scratches to kids of all ages. We’ll also have tons of craft demonstrations, including pumpkin painting with 3-D printed pumpkins and pens, clothespin airplanes, zine-making, Coding Unplugged, nebula jars, cross stitching, and more! Teen participants can get creative at our Creation Station.

Alongside our Jax Makes programming, Hemming Park—located right outside the Laura Street entrance of the Main Library—will host a Fall Festival, fit with family activities and food trucks. With so much going on in Downtown Jacksonville, Oct. 13 is a great day to visit the library!
