Jax Library Staff Picks 2018

Friday, January 4, 2019

With so many great books out there and not enough time to read, it can be daunting to even think about digging into a new release! Our library staff has narrowed down their top picks from 2018 for you.

Sadie by Courtney Summers

Alison M. recommends Sadie by Courtney Summers.

Sadie's been raising her sister Mattie in an isolated Colorado town, trying her best to provide a normal life and keep their heads above water.

When Mattie is found dead, and the police investigation is botched, Sadie is determined to bring her sister's killer to justice. She hits the road following a few meager clues.

When West McCray, a radio personality working on a segment about small, forgotten towns in America, hears Sadie's story, he becomes obsessed with finding the missing girl. He starts his own podcast as he tracks Sadie's journey, trying to figure out what happened, hoping to find her before it's too late.

My Morning Routine by Benjamin Spall and Michael Xander

Shawn N. recommends My Morning Routine by Benjamin Spall and Michael Xander.

Marie Kondo performs a quick tidying ritual to quiet her mind before leaving the house.

The president of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, Ed Catmull, mixes three shots of espresso with three scoops of cocoa powder and two sweeteners.

Fitness expert Jillian Michaels doesn't set an alarm, because her five-year-old jolts her from sleep by jumping into bed for a cuddle every morning.

Part instruction manual, part someone else's diary, the authors of My Morning Routine interviewed sixty-four of today's most successful people, including three-time Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Soni and Twitter cofounder Biz Stone, and offer advice on creating a routine of your own.

Jenna and Hurley, hosts of our podcast Completely Booked, have also selected their favorite new books of 2018.

Stay Hungry by Sebastian Maniscalo

Jenna recommends Stay Hungry by Sebastian Maniscalco.

At twenty-four, Sebastian Maniscalco arrived in LA with a suitcase and saved up minimum wages. He knew no one and nothing about standup comedy, but he was determined to go for it anyway.

At forty-four, he's on the Forbes' list of highest earning comedians, sells out arenas, and has starred in four hit comedy specials including Why Would You Do That? on Showtime.

Stay Hungry tells the story of the twenty years in between. On the way from clueless rube to standup superstar, Seb was booed off stages; survived on tips and stolen food; got advice from mentors Andrew Dice Clay, Vince Vaughn, Tony Danza, and Jerry Seinfeld; fell in love; and stayed true to his Italian-immigrant roots.

The one code that always kept him going: stay hungry, keep focused, never give up, and one day, you'll make it.

The View from Flyover Country: Dispatches from the Forgotten America by Sarah KendziorHurley recommends The View from Flyover Country: Dispatches from the Forgotten America by Sarah Kendzior.

In 2015, Sarah Kendzior collected the essays she reported for Al Jazeera and published them as The View from Flyover Country, which became an ebook bestseller and garnered praise from readers around the world. Now, The View from Flyover Country is being released in print with an updated introduction and epilogue that reflect on the ways that the Trump presidency was the certain result of the realities first captured in Kendzior’s essays.

A clear-eyed account of the realities of life in America’s overlooked heartland, The View from Flyover Country is a piercing critique of the labor exploitation, race relations, gentrification, media bias, and other aspects of the post-employment economy that gave rise to a president who rules like an autocrat. The View from Flyover Country is necessary reading for anyone who believes that the only way for America to fix its problems is to first discuss them with honesty and compassion.
