Books For Fans Of Weird Cosmic Sci-Fi Worlds Like Lovecraft Country

Thursday, August 6, 2020

Howard Phillips Lovecraft created compelling horror fiction—much of which is rooted in his racist beliefs and other anxieties. This can make revisiting his classic works such as Mountains of Madness challenging for readers... luckily there are plenty of modern authors working either within Lovecraft’s established mythology or in worlds of their own drawing some inspiration from his style of weird fiction.

One such book is Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff, which is being adapted into an HBO series. The novel is available from Jacksonville Public Library in print, through Overdrive, and Hoopla... but if you’re like me and can’t get enough of the weird here are some suggestions for further reading. Some of these directly challenge HP Lovecraft’s racism, some are just delightfully weird. All are guaranteed to unsettle a reader (in the best way). Enjoy!
